NEW YORK: Thousands of travelers faced major disruptions on Wednesday as severe thunderstorms swept across the U.S. Northeast, triggering widespread flight cancellations and delays at several of the country’s busiest airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed ground stops and traffic restrictions due to dangerous weather conditions.
The worst-hit airports include New York’s LaGuardia (LGA), John F. Kennedy (JFK), and Newark Liberty (EWR), along with Boston Logan (BOS), Philadelphia International (PHL), Washington Reagan National (DCA), and Washington Dulles (IAD). More than 2,000 flights have been cancelled or delayed as airlines struggle to manage the impact of heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds.
Major airlines, including Delta, American Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue, have issued travel waivers, allowing eligible passengers to change their bookings without additional fees. Travelers are advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport, as weather conditions may continue to affect operations throughout the day.
