Karachi: Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced plans to further expand the province’s public transport network, with the Transport Department submitting a summary to the provincial cabinet seeking approval for the purchase of 500 electric buses.
Memon said that after cabinet approval, the new electric buses would be introduced in different cities across Sindh in phases. The initiative is aimed at expanding access to modern public transport beyond Karachi and strengthening the People’s Bus Service network.
According to the minister, the Sindh government is continuously expanding the People’s Bus Service and introducing new routes to provide citizens with affordable and improved transportation facilities.
Memon said the government’s priority was to ensure that modern public transport facilities were not limited to Karachi. He added that the expansion of the service would help connect more cities and communities with improved public transportation.
The minister also said that 50 double-decker buses are expected to reach Sindh by November 30, after which they will be deployed on different routes. He said the additional buses would increase passenger capacity and provide more transportation options to commuters.
He further highlighted the launch of the People’s Bus Service in Qambar-Shahdadkot, saying the service had received a positive response from residents. Citizens in Qambar, Shahdadkot and surrounding areas have welcomed the modern bus service, according to the minister.
Memon described the electric bus project as an important addition to Sindh’s public transport system. He said the introduction of additional electric buses would also contribute to addressing growing transportation challenges in urban areas.
The Sindh government’s existing electric bus plans include a 500-bus project, with official project information identifying Karachi and Hyderabad as the initial locations for the deployment of 450 and 50 electric buses respectively.
