Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) is once again highlighting Pakistan’s growing capability to manufacture, rebuild and modernise armoured fighting vehicles, with locally produced tanks taking centre stage at its major defence-industrial complex in Taxila.
HIT has evolved from its early role in rebuilding Pakistan’s existing tank fleet into a broader military-industrial facility involved in the production, upgrade and maintenance of tanks, armoured personnel carriers, recovery vehicles and other land-based defence systems.
Among the prominent platforms associated with HIT is the HAIDER main battle tank, which was unveiled as a Pakistani-produced platform developed through collaboration between HIT, China’s NORINCO and Pakistani industries. The programme reflects Pakistan’s effort to increase domestic manufacturing and localisation of critical armoured-vehicle technologies.
HIT’s current portfolio also includes the Al-Khalid family of main battle tanks and other armoured platforms. More recently, the organisation has expanded beyond conventional armoured vehicles, unveiling systems such as the P-905 counter-unmanned aerial system, combining radar and interceptor-drone technology.
The development comes as Pakistan continues to place greater emphasis on defence-industrial self-reliance, local production and the ability to maintain and upgrade military equipment within the country. HIT’s expanding capabilities also position Pakistan to pursue potential international defence cooperation and exports.
The Taxila facility therefore represents more than a tank manufacturing site: it has become a key part of Pakistan’s broader effort to build an increasingly capable domestic defence-production ecosystem.
