On the night of 7–8 September 1965, the Pakistan Navy carried out Operation Dwarka, also known as Operation Somnath, during the India-Pakistan war.
A Pakistani naval task force comprising seven warships, led by Commodore S. M. Anwar, sailed toward the Indian coastal town of Dwarka in Gujarat and launched a bombardment shortly after midnight.
The operation was aimed at striking strategic installations around Dwarka, including the radar facility, while also creating a diversion and potentially drawing Indian naval forces away from their bases.
The Pakistani ships fired hundreds of rounds before withdrawing safely. Pakistan Navy considers the operation a landmark achievement in its history, and 8 September is commemorated as Pakistan Navy Day.
