KARACHI: Karachi Port has achieved a historic milestone by handling 55 million tons of cargo during the fiscal year 2025-26, setting a new record in its 138-year history, Chairman Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Rear Admiral (R) Shahid Ahmed announced.
According to the KPT chairman, the port also successfully handled 2.75 million containers and 2,015 cargo vessels, reflecting a significant increase in maritime trade and port operations.
He said Karachi Port is rapidly emerging as a regional transshipment hub, with leading international shipping companies increasingly recognizing it as a key center for transshipment and transit trade in the region.
The chairman revealed that Pakistan has also launched bunkering services for foreign vessels, generating valuable foreign exchange. Since November, more than 135 ships have been provided with bunkering services, while the initial phase of furnace oil bunkering has already started contributing significant revenue. He expressed optimism that the sector would generate even higher earnings over the next two to three years.
Despite regional tensions, KPT successfully introduced a cargo feeder service, enabling the movement of transshipment cargo from Karachi to Oman and other destinations. To encourage transshipment activities, port and terminal operator charges have also been reduced.
Rear Admiral (R) Shahid Ahmed further stated that more than 85 of the 99 targets set under the Maritime Task Force have already been achieved, reflecting continued progress in modernizing Pakistan’s maritime sector.
