US National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion, Reaching Historic Milestone

Published:

he United States’ gross national debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, marking an unprecedented milestone in the country’s fiscal history. Treasury data showed total public debt outstanding reached approximately $40.047 trillion on August 18, 2026.

The debt has more than doubled in less than a decade, rising from about $19.95 trillion in January 2017. The latest increase reflects persistent federal budget deficits, rising spending on Social Security, Medicare and other programmes, as well as rapidly growing interest costs.

Debt held by the public accounts for roughly $32.3 trillion, while about $7.8 trillion is intragovernmental debt. The $40 trillion threshold was reached only months after the national debt crossed $39 trillion in March.

Economists and fiscal watchdogs have warned that continued borrowing could put additional pressure on government finances and borrowing costs. The development comes as long-term US Treasury yields remain elevated, increasing the cost of servicing federal debt.

The milestone has renewed debate in Washington over government spending, taxation and the long-term sustainability of US finances.
