Shehbaz Sharif Appoints Retired Lt Gen Zafar Iqbal as SAPM on Energy

Published:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed retired Lieutenant General Zafar Iqbal as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Energy, assigning him oversight of Pakistan’s power and petroleum divisions.

According to a notification issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Zafar Iqbal was already supervising both divisions in his capacity as head of the National Coordination and Management Council (NCMC).

The appointment formalises his role in overseeing key areas of the country’s energy sector, which includes electricity and petroleum-related matters.

NCMC Established to Strengthen Coordination

The National Coordination and Management Council was established in April to replace the National Coordination Committee on Prices. The council was formed as part of the government’s coordination framework for managing key economic and administrative matters.

Zafar Iqbal’s existing responsibilities within the NCMC had already included oversight of the power and petroleum divisions. His appointment as SAPM on Energy now places these responsibilities within a formal advisory role attached to the prime minister.

Focus on Pakistan’s Energy Sector

Pakistan’s energy sector remains a key area of government attention, particularly in relation to electricity supply, petroleum management and broader economic coordination.

With Zafar Iqbal assigned responsibility for the power and petroleum divisions, his role will involve oversight of two major components of the country’s energy administration.

Further details regarding the scope of his responsibilities and any additional policy measures were not included in the information provided in the notification summary.
