Former Nigeria captain and Al-Ahli defender William Troost-Ekong has reportedly embraced Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.
A video circulating online shows the 33-year-old Nigerian defender reciting the two testimonies of faith in Arabic. The moment was also reported by Qatar’s Al-Arab newspaper and Al Jazeera.
According to reports, Troost-Ekong has expressed a desire to learn more about Islam and deepen his understanding of the faith. A Kuwaiti preacher who shared the video said Muslim friends around the footballer at his club had helped introduce him to Islam. However, Troost-Ekong has not publicly provided detailed comments about what led to his decision.
Troost-Ekong currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli, having joined the club in January 2026. Before moving to Qatar, the defender represented several European clubs, including Udinese, Watford, Salernitana and PAOK.
The centre-back also enjoyed a notable international career with Nigeria, earning 83 caps between 2015 and 2025. He captained the Super Eagles during their run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, where he was named Player of the Tournament.
Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football in December 2025.
