ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the imposition of emergency and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, following recommendations from the federal government.
According to state media, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the provincial government led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, along with its cabinet and advisers, had ceased to function under the proclamation.
The federal government has cited the deteriorating security situation, rising militant activity and concerns over coordination with provincial authorities as grounds for the decision. The provincial administration’s powers have been transferred to the governor under the announced arrangements.
An 11-member advisory council has also been formed to assist in running provincial affairs. The government has additionally announced administrative arrangements for 12 districts under a separate proclamation.
The development marks a significant constitutional and political shift in the province, which is governed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The decision is expected to intensify debate over provincial autonomy, constitutional safeguards and the federal government’s authority.
The precise scope and duration of the measures will depend on the official proclamations and applicable constitutional procedures.
