Italian Embassy Apologises After Viral Train Confrontation in Bangkok

Published:

Bangkok: The Italian Embassy in Thailand has issued a formal apology after a viral video showed a group of Italian teenagers involved in a heated confrontation with a Thai woman aboard a Bangkok BTS Skytrain, sparking widespread criticism on social media.

The incident occurred when the Thai passenger asked the group to lower their voices, saying loud behavior was considered disrespectful on public transport in Thailand. The exchange escalated after some of the teenagers responded with offensive remarks and gestures, including one student making an obscene hand gesture. The video quickly spread online, prompting thousands of reactions and calls for accountability.

In response, the Italian Embassy condemned the teenagers’ behavior, stressing that it does not reflect the values of the Italian people or the long-standing friendship between Italy and Thailand. The embassy expressed sincere apologies to the Thai public and everyone affected by the incident.

A video released by the embassy also featured the student involved and adult group leaders apologizing for the incident. One of the organizers confirmed that the teenager responsible for the offensive gesture would return to Italy early because of his conduct.

The incident has reignited debate in Thailand over tourist behavior and respect for local customs. It also comes amid tighter scrutiny of foreign visitors, following recent government measures to reduce visa-free stay periods and crack down on misconduct involving tourists
