Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit India next month to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, according to three Indian sources cited by Reuters. If confirmed, the trip would mark Xi’s first visit to India in seven years.
India is scheduled to host the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026. Xi is reportedly expected to travel with a delegation of around 400 officials, more than twice the size of the Chinese delegation that accompanied him during his 2019 India visit.
The possible visit comes as Beijing and New Delhi attempt to stabilize relations following years of tensions after the deadly 2020 border clashes. Both sides have been working to improve diplomatic engagement while continuing to address unresolved border and security issues.
Chinese officials are reportedly finalizing hotel arrangements and security protocols, although Xi’s attendance has not yet been officially confirmed by Beijing.
The visit, if it takes place, could carry significance beyond the BRICS agenda, potentially providing an opportunity for Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss bilateral relations, trade, regional security and the long-running border dispute.
