KARACHI, A sessions court in Karachi’s South district has handed over former project director Zameer Abbasi to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on physical remand until September 22 in a case registered under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.
The FIA produced the arrested suspect before the court and requested physical remand for further investigation. The agency told the court that it needed to question Abbasi about his alleged associates and examine his financial transactions.
FIA Alleges Use Of Benami Accounts
According to the FIA, Zameer Abbasi is a Grade-19 officer who has served in different government departments.
The investigation agency alleged that Abbasi established accounts in the names of his father, wife and alleged frontmen and used them for financial transactions.
The FIA further alleged that Abbasi transferred substantial amounts of money allegedly obtained through corruption to foreign countries through hawala and hundi channels.
Over Rs5.55 Billion In Transactions Under Investigation
The FIA told the court that more than 1,100 transactions involving over Rs5.55 billion were recorded between 2012 and 2026.
According to the agency, some of the funds were transferred to Abbasi by his father and wife. Investigators are examining the source and movement of the funds as part of the ongoing inquiry.
24 Foreign Trips Under Investigation
The FIA also informed the court that Abbasi made 24 foreign trips during the period under investigation.
According to the agency, the foreign visits are being examined in connection with its investigation into alleged overseas financial arrangements and movement of funds.
Life Insurance Payments Also Examined
The FIA further alleged that Abbasi paid more than Rs35.5 million in premiums for seven life insurance policies over a period of eight years.
The payments, along with other financial transactions, have been included in the investigation.
Court Grants Physical Remand
After hearing the FIA’s request, the sessions court in South Karachi granted the agency physical custody of Abbasi until September 22.
The FIA is expected to continue questioning the suspect and examining financial records, alleged associates and other aspects of the case during the remand period.
