LAHORE: Social media personality Rajab Butt has apologised over a video that recently resurfaced online in which he made what he described as an inappropriate joke concerning child abuse.
In a statement shared on social media, Butt said the video had been circulating for the past few days and acknowledged that what he said was inappropriate and unacceptable, regardless of his intentions at the time.
He said jokes of this nature have unfortunately become normalised in society, particularly in gatherings among men, but stressed that such remarks should not be considered acceptable.
Butt also acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue, saying that given the seriousness and pain associated with child abuse in Pakistan, he should have been more mindful and sensitive before making such a remark.
“From the bottom of my heart, I apologise to everyone whose sentiments I have hurt, whose traumas I may have triggered and who I have made uncomfortable through my words,” he said in his statement.
He clarified that the video was old but said its age did not excuse what was said. Butt added that he was trying to learn from the incident and become more mindful and responsible about his words and the impact they can have on others.
The apology comes as the video continues to circulate on social media, prompting criticism and discussion over the normalisation of jokes involving serious issues such as child abuse.
