Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has removed the federal health secretary following the tragic fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.
The fire broke out in the hospital’s gynaecology and Mother and Child Health ward, where newborns were receiving treatment. The incident resulted in the deaths of several infants and triggered widespread concern over hospital safety and emergency preparedness.
Following the tragedy, the prime minister ordered authorities to investigate the incident and determine whether negligence or safety failures contributed to the deaths.
The removal of the health secretary comes as the government faces growing questions over fire safety arrangements, emergency response systems and accountability at major public hospitals.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, while further action is expected once the findings are established.
