The Petroleum Division has increased petrol prices by Rs6.51 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by a steep Rs19.39 per litre, pushing fuel rates close to the historic Rs400 mark.
According to the official notification, the new prices came into effect on May 1, 2026. Authorities also adjusted the petroleum levy, reducing it on petrol by Rs3.88 to Rs103.50 per litre, while imposing a Rs28.69 per litre levy on diesel for the first time.
The government continues weekly price reviews due to volatility in global oil markets, influenced by tensions in the Middle East. In the previous revision, both petrol and diesel prices had already surged by Rs26.77 per litre.
Globally, oil prices recently hit a four-year high, with Brent crude briefly crossing $126 per barrel before easing to around $110.
The latest increase adds further pressure on consumers, as fuel costs edge toward record highs amid ongoing economic challenges.
