KARACHI: PPP leader and Sindh minister Saeed Ghani has questioned the Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) rationale for staging sit-ins in Karachi, saying such protests should not create difficulties for the citizens whose issues the party claims to represent.
Ghani said political parties have the right to raise public concerns and hold peaceful demonstrations, but such activities should be conducted responsibly and without unnecessarily disrupting the routine lives of Karachi residents.
He criticised the use of major roads and public spaces for prolonged sit-ins, arguing that traffic disruptions can affect thousands of commuters, businesses and families.
The remarks come amid continuing political differences between the PPP-led Sindh government and the JI over Karachi’s civic issues and the methods used to highlight them.
The JI has maintained that its protests are aimed at drawing attention to problems faced by Karachi residents and pressing the authorities for solutions.
Ghani’s comments have once again brought the issue of balancing the right to peaceful protest with the public’s right to uninterrupted movement into focus.
