The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, ending a designation that had remained in place since 1979. The decision marks a major shift in Washington’s policy toward Damascus and could ease important economic and financial restrictions on Syria.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the move recognizes efforts by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to distance the country from international terrorism. The decision followed a 45-day review by Congress after the US administration announced its intention to remove Syria from the list.
Removal from the list eliminates several restrictions associated with the designation, including limits on US foreign assistance, defence exports and certain financial transactions. The move could also help attract international investment and support Syria’s post-war reconstruction.
Syria’s government welcomed the decision, saying it could help the country reconnect with the global financial system and accelerate economic recovery.
The United States previously listed Syria as a State Sponsor of Terrorism in December 1979. With Syria’s removal, Cuba, Iran and North Korea remain on the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list.
