HONOLULU: Hurricane Fausto is expected to weaken before reaching the Hawaiian Islands, but emergency officials are warning residents not to let their guard down. According to forecasters, the storm is moving over cooler Pacific waters, which should reduce its intensity before it nears Hawaii.
Despite the expected weakening, the storm could still bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, dangerous surf, and localized flooding to parts of the state. High waves and powerful rip currents are also expected to create hazardous conditions along coastal areas, prompting authorities to advise people to stay away from beaches during the storm.
State and local emergency agencies have urged residents to complete their disaster preparations, including securing outdoor belongings, stocking food, water, medications, flashlights, and other emergency supplies. Officials also recommend keeping mobile devices charged and staying informed through official weather updates, as hurricanes can change direction or intensity with little warning.
The National Weather Service continues to monitor Hurricane Fausto closely and will issue additional advisories if conditions change. While Hawaii may avoid the storm’s strongest winds, authorities stress that residents should remain alert until the system has safely passed.
