Who Is Lt Gen Aamer Raza? Pakistan’s New Four-Star General and First Commander of National Strategic Command

ISLAMABAD: Lieutenant General Aamer Raza has been promoted to the rank of four-star general and appointed as Pakistan’s first-ever Commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC), a newly established position responsible for overseeing the country’s strategic capabilities under Pakistan’s restructured military command system. The appointment was announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on July 24, 2026.

Military Career

General Aamer Raza is regarded as one of the Pakistan Army’s most experienced senior officers. Before his promotion, he served as the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) at General Headquarters (GHQ), one of the army’s most influential operational positions.

Over his military career, he has also held several key appointments, including:

  • Chief of the General Staff (CGS)
  • Commander, IV Corps Lahore
  • Chairman, Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT)
  • Commander of various armoured and infantry formations
  • Instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta

He was commissioned into the 6th Lancers (Watson’s Horse) and is a graduate of the Command and Staff College, Quetta, National Defence University (Islamabad), and the University of Nottingham.

First Commander of National Strategic Command

General Aamer Raza becomes the first officer to lead the National Strategic Command, a newly created four-star command responsible for supervising Pakistan’s strategic and nuclear command structure following recent constitutional and military reforms.

The National Strategic Command was established as part of Pakistan’s revised defence framework after the restructuring of the country’s top military command, making the CNSC one of the most significant appointments in Pakistan’s armed forces.
