US CIA Director John Ratcliffe held talks with Russian intelligence officials during a visit to Moscow, the Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Ratcliffe did not meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Putin was briefed on the outcome of the discussions.
The Kremlin did not reveal what was discussed during the meetings, but described continued contact between the US and Russian intelligence agencies as a positive development.
The talks come at a sensitive time, with US-Russia relations facing a deep crisis and the war in Ukraine continuing to escalate.
Peskov said it was too early to determine whether such intelligence contacts could help improve broader relations between Washington and Moscow
