KARACHI: Questions are being raised over Sindh’s wheat policy as changing procurement decisions and continued price fluctuations add pressure on farmers, traders and consumers.
The Sindh government introduced a revised procurement strategy for the 2025-26 season, setting a target of 1 million tonnes at an indicative price of Rs3,500 per 40kg. The policy aims to support farmers, build strategic reserves and help stabilise flour prices.
However, wheat prices have remained volatile across Pakistan. The State Bank noted that the shift away from the traditional government procurement system intensified price volatility, while the current framework relies more on strategic reserves and market-based pricing.
Recent reports have also highlighted rising wheat and flour prices, with supply constraints and lower production contributing to renewed pressure in domestic markets.
The debate now centres on whether Sindh’s procurement model can provide enough support to growers while ensuring affordable wheat and flour for consumers.
