TTAP Convoy Reaches Lahore Despite Police Action Ahead of Feb 8 Protests

LAHORE: A convoy of the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) reached Lahore on Thursday despite police action, arrests and road blockages, as the opposition alliance continued its mobilisation campaign ahead of the second anniversary of the February 8, 2024 general elections.

Led by TTAP chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the convoy travelled from Islamabad via GT Road. The alliance claimed several workers were detained and convoy vehicles vandalised at different locations, including Gujar Khan, Gujrat, Kharian and Lahore.

TTAP said containers were placed to block routes near Data Darbar, while dozens of workers, including leaders of constituent parties, were arrested in Lahore. Police officials, however, denied some of the arrest claims, saying individuals were briefly detained for questioning and later released.

Addressing supporters after arriving in Lahore, TTAP leaders said the movement aims to restore the Constitution, rule of law and respect for the public mandate. They announced nationwide protests on February 8, which opposition parties plan to observe as a “black day” over alleged rigging in the 2024 elections.

Achakzai stressed that the movement would remain peaceful and urged citizens, traders and transporters to join the protest. TTAP leaders are scheduled to stay in Lahore for three days and hold meetings with lawyers and political workers.
