KARACHI: The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has shut down eight tyre-burning pyrolysis plants in Karachi’s Keamari district following directives from Environment Secretary Faisal Ahmed Aqeeqi.
The action was taken as part of enforcement of the Sindh government’s ban on tyre pyrolysis. Aqeeqi said burning waste tyres without proper safety and environmental controls can release toxic fumes, fine particles and hazardous chemicals into the atmosphere.
The environment secretary warned that smoke from tyre burning can pose serious health risks, including breathing difficulties, eye and throat irritation and asthma-related problems.
Aqeeqi said violations of environmental laws would not be tolerated and that enforcement measures would be intensified under a zero-tolerance policy against activities contributing to environmental pollution.
