KARACHI: Former Pakistan Test coach Jason Gillespie has advised current coach Mike Hesson to trust his instincts and avoid becoming a “yes man” as he takes charge of Pakistan’s red-ball setup.
Gillespie, who stepped down as Pakistan’s Test coach in December 2024, said Hesson is an excellent coach but should not compromise his principles simply to remain in the job.
Reflecting on his own experience with the Pakistan Cricket Board, Gillespie claimed his responsibilities were significantly reduced after Aaqib Javed became chairman of selectors. He said the experience affected his confidence and left him questioning his future in coaching.
Gillespie also claimed that the PCB still owes him thousands of dollars, saying he was unwilling to compromise his principles or simply agree with decisions to keep his position.
His comments come as Hesson takes charge of Pakistan’s Test side during a period of major changes following the team’s difficult tour of England.
