NEW DELHI: Global civil society alliance CIVICUS has placed India on its latest watchlist, citing reported concerns over civic freedoms and the operating environment for civil society organizations.
According to CIVICUS, the watchlist highlights countries where there are significant developments affecting civic space, including issues related to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and the work of human rights defenders. The organization said recent developments in India prompted its inclusion on the list.
CIVICUS noted that the watchlist is intended to draw international attention to trends that may impact democratic participation and civic rights. The organization urged authorities to uphold constitutional freedoms and ensure an environment where civil society and independent voices can operate freely.
Indian authorities have previously maintained that the country’s democratic institutions remain strong and that legal measures are implemented in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law.
The development has sparked discussion among rights organizations and observers, while the Indian government has not issued a fresh response specifically regarding the latest watchlist announcement.
