Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warned against the weaponisation of water, stressing that shared water resources must never be used for political coercion or leverage.
Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State meeting in Bishkek, the prime minister described water as the “lifeblood” of the region, saying it sustains millions of people and is essential for the future of coming generations.
PM Shehbaz said water must never be weaponised and cannot be used as an instrument of coercion or exploited for political purposes. He stressed that treaties governing shared water resources are solemn and binding international commitments that must be honoured unconditionally in both letter and spirit.
The remarks come amid growing regional concerns over shared water resources and the Indus Waters Treaty. The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, international law and cooperation among SCO member states.
