KARACHI: The HIV crisis linked to Karachi’s Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital has raised serious concerns, with extensive screening in and around the facility identifying 120 people who tested positive for HIV.
According to Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, more than 10,500 people were screened following the emergence of HIV cases linked to the SESSI-run hospital. Earlier official findings had confirmed 78 HIV-positive children, including reported deaths, while authorities continued wider screening in surrounding communities.
The Sindh High Court later ordered an independent and comprehensive inquiry into the outbreak. The investigation is expected to examine the actual number of affected patients, the possible source and mode of transmission, infection-control procedures, and the responsibility of medical, technical and administrative officials.
Authorities have also initiated action against hospital personnel following earlier inquiries. The government has said affected patients will receive medical support, while the investigation continues to determine the full circumstances behind the outbreak.
Important clarification: The figure of 120 refers to people who tested HIV-positive during wider screening, while the official figure specifically confirmed for children linked to the Valika Hospital outbreak was previously reported as 78. The exact total and circumstances remain under investigation.
