ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s proposed transfer to Shifa International Hospital has become a major talking point on Pakistani social media, with users turning the development into a wave of memes and humorous posts.
The Supreme Court on August 18 ordered authorities to transfer Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical examination and treatment amid concerns over his health. The court also directed that a medical board comprising relevant specialists be constituted for his assessment.

Supreme Court orders hospital transfer
The Supreme Court’s August 18 order directed the government to move Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days for medical assessment and treatment.
The court ordered the formation of a medical board that would include specialists in areas including internal medicine, general surgery, ophthalmology and cardiology. Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, were also allowed to remain associated with his medical care.
The court also ordered weekly family meetings and twice-weekly telephone conversations between Khan and his sons.
Government challenges the transfer
The proposed move subsequently became the subject of another legal development.
The federal government filed a review petition seeking reconsideration of the Supreme Court’s direction to transfer Khan to the private hospital. The government argued that existing prison procedures should be followed for the treatment and transfer of inmates.
However, on Thursday, August 20, the Supreme Court registrar’s office returned the government’s review petition with objections.
The legal dispute has added another layer to an already closely watched case surrounding Khan’s health and medical treatment.
